The Health Equation
Better Health = Reduce Stress Where Possible and Multiply Healthy Habits Over Time
By Dr. John Fresh, DC
What If I Told You Your Future Health Is Mostly in Your Hands?
Most people believe health is something that simply happens to them. They hope they’ll stay healthy, hope they avoid disease, and hope they’ll feel good as they grow older.
The truth is much more encouraging.
Your future health is not determined by chance—it is largely determined by the small choices you make every day.
Those choices become habits.
Those habits become your lifestyle.
And over time, your lifestyle becomes your health.
I’ve spent more than two decades helping people improve their health through chiropractic care while also studying the habits that allow people to live longer, healthier, more independent lives. Along the way, I’ve written three books:
- Winning Moments – learning to guide the moments in your day toward better health.
- Health Is Practically Free – because many of the greatest health improvements cost little or nothing, yet waiting until you’re sick can cost you your health, your finances, your dreams, and your independence.
- The Health Equation – bringing these ideas together into one practical guide for living a healthier life.
After years of studying research from organizations like the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Harvard Medical School, and many of the world’s leading health experts, I’ve discovered something encouraging.
Most of the greatest improvements in health don’t begin with expensive treatments.
They begin with simple daily habits.
Good News… and Bad News
I have some good news.
I believe I have found the fountain of youth.
Now for the bad news.
We have to dig the well ourselves.
The good news is that every healthy habit is another shovel full of dirt removed.
Every glass of water.
Every walk.
Every good night’s sleep.
Every healthy meal.
Every adjustment.
Every moment spent reducing unnecessary stress.
Every one of these is helping your body do what it was wonderfully designed to do—adapt, repair, and become healthier.
The body does the healing.
Healthy habits are simply the catalysts that unlock its incredible potential.
What Is a Health Catalyst?
A catalyst is something that starts a reaction.
Think about striking a match.
The match doesn’t create the fire by itself.
It simply starts the reaction.
Healthy habits work the same way.
Drinking water doesn’t heal you.
Your body heals itself.
Water simply provides one of the resources your body needs to function properly.
Walking doesn’t make you healthy.
Walking is a catalyst that tells your heart, lungs, muscles, bones, brain, and metabolism to become stronger.
Likewise, negative habits become negative catalysts.
Too much stress.
Poor sleep.
Smoking.
Processed foods.
Little movement.
These all signal the body to move in the opposite direction.
Every day, your body is responding to the catalysts you provide.
The Health Equation
After years of practice, study, and observation, I’ve simplified healthy living into one easy equation.
Better Health = Reduce Stress Where Possible + Multiply Healthy Habits Over Time
That’s it.
Not perfection.
Not extreme diets.
Not impossible workout routines.
Simply reduce unnecessary stress whenever you can and consistently multiply healthy habits throughout your life.
Small actions.
Repeated consistently.
Lead to extraordinary results.
The 8 Health Catalysts
These are the eight areas that have the greatest influence on your health and your quality of life.
1. Mental Stress
Reduce worry and increase peace of mind.
A peaceful mind allows your body to function more effectively than a mind overwhelmed by constant stress.
2. Physical Stress
Protect your body from unnecessary strain.
Good posture, proper lifting, movement, and caring for your spine all reduce unnecessary wear and tear on your body.
3. Chemical Stress
Reduce the things that burden your body.
The food you eat, the water you drink, the air you breathe, and the chemicals you’re exposed to all influence your health.
4. Brain & Joint Health
Keep your mind sharp and your spine healthy.
Your brain controls every function in your body, and your spine helps protect the nervous system that allows those messages to travel.
Healthy movement, learning, balance, and caring for your spine all help support lifelong function.
5. Water, Air, Food & Blood Work
Give your body the resources it needs.
Your body is incredibly intelligent—but it still needs proper fuel, oxygen, hydration, and an occasional look under the hood through routine blood work to perform at its best.
6. Sleep, Rest & Recovery
Your body heals when you rest.
Sleep is when much of your repair, recovery, hormone regulation, memory processing, and immune function take place.
7. Movement, Strength, Flexibility & Balance
Motion truly is one of the best medicines.
The more you move appropriately, the more your body is encouraged to remain strong, flexible, independent, and resilient.
8. Spirituality
Stay connected to purpose, faith, hope, and Christ.
In my life, pursuing Jesus Christ has become the greatest investment I can make. His wisdom teaches me how to live, His love changes how I serve others, and His strength helps carry me through life’s challenges. A healthy spirit often leads to healthier choices in every other area of life.
Think Like a Health Investor
Imagine your health is a bank account.
Every healthy habit is a deposit.
Every unhealthy habit is a withdrawal.
One deposit won’t make you wealthy.
One withdrawal won’t make you bankrupt.
But thousands of deposits over a lifetime create tremendous wealth.
The same is true with your health.
Your future health is being built one choice at a time.
Five Things You Can Do Today
- Drink one extra glass of water.
- Take a 15-minute walk.
- Spend five minutes in prayer or gratitude.
- Go to bed 30 minutes earlier tonight.
- Choose one healthy meal instead of one unhealthy one.
Don’t try to change everything.
Choose one.
Do it consistently.
Then build from there.
Start Where You Are
One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing they need the perfect plan before they begin.
You don’t.
The best health plan is the one you’ll actually follow.
Better every day will always beat perfect someday.
Whether you’re 18 or 88, today is a great day to begin making deposits into your health account.
Your body has an amazing ability to adapt. Give it the right catalysts, reduce unnecessary stress, and let it do what it was designed to do.
The Health Equation Takeaway
Health isn’t something you find—it’s something you build.
Every healthy habit is a catalyst that encourages your body to adapt, repair, and become more resilient. Every unnecessary stress or unhealthy habit pushes it in the opposite direction.
You don’t have to become perfect overnight. You simply have to become a little better today than you were yesterday.
Over time, those small improvements become extraordinary health.
“Your future health is not determined by chance—it is largely determined by the accumulation of your daily habits, both positive and negative.”
